Nara

Nara was Japan's first real capital. Nara is second only to Kyoto as a repository of Japan's cultural legacy, although it is only a very small city.
Most of its temples and museums are located in a huge park next to the city. One of the most interesting aspects is that deers run around freely in this park, and as it is not fenced some of them make a trip into Nara City from time to time.

The Todai-ji Nandai-mon, a huge gate you have to pass on your way to the famous temple Todai-ji.

The Todai-ji. After the Nandai-mon, you have to pass another gate before you can see this temple.

Hiroshima

Hiroshima will always be remembered for this terrible incident on August 6, 1945, when it became the world's first atomic bomb target. Today, Hiroshima is a very lively and modern city, and only the Peace Memorial Park reminds of this tragedy.

The A-Bomb Dome. This building was the Industrial Promotion Hall until the atomic bomb exploded almost directly above it. Its ruins have remained unchanged and still are in the same state as they have been right after the nuclear explosion.

The memorial plaque of the Aioi Bridge, which is next to the A-Bomb Dome.

The center of the Peace Memorial Park with the cenotaph that contains the names of all the known victims of the atomic bomb. In the background you can see the A-Bomb Dome. A flame is located between the A-Bomb Dome and the cenotaph, but it is hard to see on the picture. It will be extinguished when the last nuclear bomb has been destroyed.

This tree once stood a few hundred meters away from the center of the explosion - and survived! It has been replanted to the Peace Memorial Park. Even today you can still see that one side is burnt and the other one is healthy. In the background on the left side of the picture is the Peace Memorial Museum.
